When Investing More in Marketing Is a Mistake

We need to invest more in marketing” is a phrase that appears quickly when results don’t come.

Sometimes it’s true.

Many times, it isn’t.

Investing more is usually a mistake when:

  • the positioning is not clear,
  • the product has not yet found its fit,
  • the message changes every few weeks,
  • or there is no internal alignment on what the company is actually trying to achieve.

In those cases, marketing does not amplify success — it amplifies disorder.

More budget does not correct poorly framed decisions.

It simply makes them more visible… and more expensive.

A clear warning sign is when the conversation focuses on what to do before deciding why and for what purpose.

Another is when new tactics are pursued without properly evaluating the previous ones.

Before investing more, it is usually more useful to pause and ask:

  • What decision are we postponing?
  • Which assumptions are we treating as facts?
  • What would have to be true for this investment to make sense?

Choosing not to invest is also a strategic decision.

And sometimes the smartest one.

Before spending more, it is worth deciding better.

That is exactly what strategic sessions are for: bringing clarity before action.
