Most Growth Problems Are Not Marketing Problems

When a company stops growing or fails to move forward at the expected pace, the most common reaction is to look at marketing.

More traffic. More campaigns. More content. More investment.

In practice, that is rarely the real problem.

After years of working with founders and teams in different contexts, the pattern repeats itself: the blockage is not in the channels, but in the decisions that are being made — or not being made.

Some common examples:

  • There is no clear priority; everything seems important
  • Teams try to optimise something that is not yet well defined
  • Symptoms (low conversion, poor engagement) are confused with the real causes
  • Tactics that worked in other businesses are copied without questioning the context

When the problem is a decision problem, adding more marketing usually makes it worse.

It adds noise, complexity, and fatigue… without addressing the root issue.

Sustainable growth usually starts earlier:

  • clarifying which problem actually deserves attention now,
  • understanding which assumptions are being treated as facts without evidence,
  • and deciding what not to do, even when it is tempting.

Marketing works when there is prior clarity.

Without it, it simply accelerates confusion.

If you are at a point where “doing more marketing” doesn’t quite make sense, the real work is probably not executing more — but deciding better.

That kind of clarity is exactly what I work on in my 1:1 strategic sessions.
